Microsoft has officially launched Windows 8 on Thursday. The launch event was kicked off in New Work City by Steven Sinofsky, president of Windows and Windows Live.
Sinofsky walked the audience through the era of Windows 95 to the new version of Windows. Although Sinofsky acknowledged shortcomings of the Windows Store compared to the competition in terms of offerings, he emphasized, “We see today as a grand opening, and a very strong one.”
Later on, Microsoft executives Mike Angiulo and Julie Larson-Green continued the event with a detailed demonstration of Windows 8 on old and new devices. Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, stormed the stage after that. Ballmer once again demonstrated various capabilities of Windows 8 and welcomed users to the “new world.”
From tomorrow, exactly at 12:01 am, Windows 8 will be available to consumers worldwide. Microsoft has also kicked off Windows Store in 231 markets in 109 languages.
Windows users can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99. Those who want a DVD copy of the new operating system need to pay $69.99. This pricing will be valid till January next year. Consumers will also be able to select from about 1,000 Windows 8 certified devices.
