Fans of the Windows Phone platform have anxiously been waiting for a more affordable Window Phone 8 device to arrive. Apparently, Nokia has been working on one for some time and took many by surprise when it announced a 3.8-inch Nokia Lumia 620 at the LeWeb 2012 event in Paris.

Nokia Lumia 620 is a rather humble, entry-level Windows Phone 8 device. In other words, if you don’t want to spend too much money and still wish to get a first-hand experience of the latest Windows Phone release, this is your best bet.

Lumia 620 packs a 1 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor together with 500 MB of RAM and a mere 8 GB of internal storage. The screen is also a fairly modest – WVGA display with a 800 x 480 resolution. The good part is that you can extend the internal storage space through a microSD card. It also packs a 5-megapixel rear camera which can capture 720p videos.

The device carries a price tag of $249, minus the tax and is expected to arrive by January next year. The first market to receive the new Windows Phone 8 phone is Asia, followed by Europe, Middle East and other countries.

Nokia is quick to remind us that despite the low price tag, the device comes packed with a true Nokia experience. According to the executive Vice President of Nokia Smart Devices, Jo Harlow, “With its innovative design, the latest Windows Phone 8 software and signature experiences from Nokia, like Nokia lenses, Nokia Maps and Nokia Music, the Nokia Lumia 620 is a highly competitive smartphone at this price point.”

Apparently, with the rather low price tag, Nokia has plans of wooing the developing markets which is a rather apt strategy. Even in the developed countries, the device may attract a good fan-following given its impressive looks and the fairly adequate hardware for new Windows Phone users.
