In this competitive world, mobile phone carriers adopt different plans or strategy every now and then to grab new customers and retain existing ones. Verizon, one of the biggest mobile phone carriers in U.S. seems to have adopted a new plan; it may sell LTE phones only from next year.
One of the main laggings of LTE technology is the absence of integrated support for voice and SMS services. To overcome these shortcomings of LTE technology Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology has been introduced. It will ensure higher efficiency by reducing signaling overhead, as well as higher quality at areas with weak coverage. Verizon will launch the VoLTE service by the end of 2013, and the moment that is achieved, there will be no need for the CDMA chipset within handsets. So, Verizon’s chief financial officer Fran Shammo said at Deutsche Bank’s Media, Internet, and Telecom conference that Verizon has plans to offer LTE smartphones only from 2014 onwards.
Verizon believes adopting such anomalous plan will grab new customers to join the network. The company also believes that the plan of selling LTE smartphones only will help it to reduce subsidies on other devices of Verizon.
