Facebook has teamed up with McAfee to offer a free six-month subscription to its security software.
The companies point out that Facebook’s 350 million users represent “a significant portion of the internet population’. And it’s a portion that’s suffered more than its fair share from hackers, scammers and the like.
“partnering with a market leader like McAfee, we are taking an unprecedented step towards making the entire Internet more secure and reducing the possibility of threats being brought onto our service by unsuspecting users,” said Elliot Schrage, vice president of global communications, marketing and public policy for Facebook.
Under the deal, users will get six months’ free subscription to the McAfee Internet Security Suite, with a special discount thereafter. Facebook will also offer users a free tool based on custom McAfee technology to clean up their hard drives after an attack.
“We’re not aware of another free Internet service that takes this much responsibility for helping people keep their accounts secure,” said Jake Brill, a Facebook project manager.
Facebook says it won’t make any profit from the deal and that it hopes this is “something that other services will emulate”. McAfee, obviously, will get a nice and not-so-little client base.
