Apple began taking preorders for the iPhone 4S and also revealed its next-generation handset will be sold unlocked and contract-free in November starting at $649. The unlocked iPhone 4GS will only work on supported GSM networks, but it will not work with any CDMA carriers and customers who buy an unlocked iPhone 4S will be able to use the handset internationally on GSM networks. They must obtain a micro-SIM card from a local GSM carrier to put in the handset and the contract-free iPhone 4S is available in all three standard capacities, and is priced at $649 for 16GB, $749 for 32GB and $849 for 64GB. When Apple Canada promised the unlocked iPhone 4S for North on October 14, some American users wondered when it was coming to our shores and Apple answered that, when it updated its site with more info and listed a November release month. There’s no specific date listed yet, the unlocked prices revealed are as follows: 16GB for $649, 32GB $749, and 64GB for $849. The iPhone 4S takes a micro SIM card, so you’ll want to bear that in mind if you’re traveling with this and if you’re willing to join the ranks of the many users saddled with 2G speeds just to remain with that beloved Magenta carrier, at least you’ll have an easier time of it now that Tmo offers iPhone-friendly micro SIM cards. About the Unlocked iPhone
The unlocked iPhone includes all the features of iPhone but without a contract commitment. You can activate and use it on the supported GSM wireless network of your choice, such as AT&T in the United States.* The unlocked iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S will not work with CDMA-based carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.
If you don’t want a multiyear service contract or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone is the best choice. It arrives without a micro-SIM card, so you’ll need an active micro-SIM card from any supported GSM carrier worldwide. To start using it, simply insert the micro-SIM card into the slot on your iPhone and turn it on by pressing and holding the On/Off button for a few seconds. Then follow the onscreen instructions to set up your iPhone.
The unlocked iPhone 4S will:
- Not require a contract from any carrier
- Not work on Verizon Wireless‘ network
- Not work on Sprint‘s network
- Only work on supported GSM carriers (like AT&T)
- Not work on T-Mobile via 3G or HSDPA/HSPA+. (It doesn’t support the necessary 1700 / 2100 AWS bands or HSDPA frequencies.) It will, however, work via Edge, just like unlocked iPhones have always done.
