The latest proof of this success is that The Guardian’s iPad app has been downloaded more than 500,000 times ever since it’s release in October. On Christmas Day, the app was downloaded a whooping 23,000 times. And now, the newspaper is also planning to add it’s Weekend magazine to the app through an upgrade.
It is interesting to note here that while the download is free, the app is not free. A user has to pay $9.99 per month through Apple’s in-app purchase method to be able to read Guardian’s daily newspaper. However, if you are also subscribed to a print edition of The Guardian, you get to read the digital edition through the iPad app for free.
There are a number of other attractive options too. For instance, you can make use of a three-month free trail period offered through Channel 4. Although the price-tag is quite high compared to other apps used on iPad, it is somewhat justified. You get to have not only online reading but can also read the paper offline. Moreover, the format received by the iPad app display the content very seamlessly, with the ads and videos integrated finely within the content.
And now, The Guardian is also planning to add the Weekend magazine to the app. Reading a magazine is lot more slick and entertaining than reading a paper on a tablet. And with it’s high-res photos and full-page articles, the magazine will make a fine addition to the content offered through the app. This is, by the way, not the first success for Guardian in the digital realm. The users of it’s Facebook app are already more than 4 million while the iPhone app downloads have likewise exceeded the figure of 500,000.
