Apparently, the third carrier on the largest market in the world, China Mobile will be able to offer a CDMA version of iPhone 4S to its subscribers starting this month or in early March. The news comes from China Telecom subsidiary Beijing Telecom. The carrier explained in a press release, quoted by China Daily, that “China Telecom has already started preparatory work for the launch of the iPhone 4S.”
So far, no price information have been made public and Apple’s officials were reluctant, as expected, to offer further details. At the moment, the flagship Apple handset is available in China only for China Unicom subscribers who are willing to sign a three year contract with the carrier.
The Cupertino based company could not limit its opportunities to expand its sales power on the largest market in the world. According to recent reports, Apple has tapped only 10% of the Chinese market potential so far and rumors point out that Apple is working for months to sign agreements with China Telecom and China Mobile. With China Mobile onboard, which is the largest carrier in the world, iPhone could be available for 650 million subscribers.
CNET reported since last August that Apple managed to close a “preliminary agreements” with China Telecom, which has about 12% of the total Chinese wireless subscriber base.
