Hundreds of thousands of people around the world are in need of donated organs which they can then transplant and lead a healthy life. People are increasingly becoming inclined to donate their organs once they pass away. Now, Facebook’s CEO Mark Zukcerberg has pitched in with his part, announcing that Facebook is getting a new ‘Organ Donor’ option under the Heath & Wellness pane of user profiles to enable users to register for organ donation.
The inspiration for this new feature for Facebook is quite interesting. According to Zuckerberg, he got the inspiration of his idea from two people: his girl friend, who happens to be in a medical school; and Steve Jobs, whom he called a ‘friend’ who was able to live a little longer due to a liver transplant.
During an exclusive interview with ABC News, he stated, ‘Facebook is really about communicating and telling stories. We think that people can really help spread awareness of organ donation and that they want to participate in this to their friends. And that can be a big part of helping solve the crisis that’s out there.’
The feature has already been made available for Facebook users in US and U.K. With the help of this feature, the users will not only be able to display their status of being an organ donor, they can also find links to the official organ donation registries. With the help of these links, they can then enroll and become official organ donors, even if they weren’t one earlier.
All you have to do to add the donor status to your Timeline is to go to your profile under the ‘Health & Wellness’ options under Life Event pane and fill in the relevant information.
