Apple May Be Changing Search Algorithm At App Store

Apple acquired the app discovery start up, Chomp, a piece of news which was revealed to us back in February. Naturally, the only use Apple could put this acquisition to, was to revamp the process of app searching in the App Store. And now, it seems that finally Apple is doing so by tweaking the search algorithm of the Store.

There are some fundamental changes that are being applied to the new search results. If your app was ranked high in certain searches because the terms was relevant, here are bad news for you: this alone wouldn’t be enough to keep you among top search results. However, if you app is quite popular and has been downloaded often, better days are coming for you.

One example to cite this is that of Best Parking app. According to the founder of BestParking.com, Ben Sann, his app is suddenly starting to appear on top of other search results, results which seem more relevant to the original search term. He agrees that this is probably Apple’s new strategy where apps with greater number of downloads, and with greater probability of being downloaded again, are ranked higher than other apps who may be relevant but not popular.

Other analysts have speculated that Apple has incorporated the download numbers into its rankings of apps, thus search results still display the high-ranked results first but they are different now. Moreover, Apple is trying to show precisely the apps a user is looking for, not just displaying a keyword match result.
