Professor Peter Higgs Said ‘Nice To Be Right Sometime’

The search for the ‘God particle‘ is over. Almost half a century after the existence of the Higgs boson (prediction of a particle that holds the universe together and gives it substance) CERN physicists announced that they might have found God particle. The British physicist Professor Peter Higgs, whose theories led to the discovery of the God particle, Higgs Boson is named after him actually. The physicist said on Friday it was “It’s very nice to be right sometime”.

Retired 83 year old British physicist Professor Peter Higgs from the Edinburgh University predicted about this particle establishing a theory in 1964 while walking in the Cairngorms. The theory described the web of particles, forces and interactions which make up the universe. Researchers at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) after 5o years of the prediction of God particle announced on Wednesday that they had found a sub-atomic particle thought to confer mass on matter. Professor Higgs was also present at CERN during its announcement. The discovery was described as “momentous” and “a milestone”. Last Friday in a press conference at the Edinburgh University, Professor Peter Higgs gave his reaction saying “It’s very nice to be right sometimes.”

Professor Peter Higgs also said, “At the beginning I had no idea whether a discovery would be made in my lifetime because we knew so little at the beginning about where this particle might be in mass, and therefore how high an energy machine would have to go before it could be discovered. The existence of this particle is so crucial to understanding how the rest of the theory works as well as it already does in terms of previous experimental verifications of the structure that it was very hard for me to understand how it couldn’t be there. It’s been a very long development over the years of the technology of building machines at higher and higher energy, and the [Large Hadron Collider] is the one which has been energetic enough and also intense enough in terms of the particle beams to do it. If it was proved to be non-existent, I would say I no longer understand the whole area of theoretical and particle physics that I thought I did understand in recent years and which were, when I was an undergraduate, a complete mystery. It’s been a long wait but it might have been even longer, I might not have been still around.”

Professor Richard Kenway of the Edinburgh University said, “Discovery of the Higgs boson completes our picture of the known elementary particles, but these make up only 4% of the universe. “It demonstrates the power of theoretical physics to explain nature, even though it took over 50 years for the experimental confirmation. So, we are confident that the work of the Higgs Centre can guide our search for what the rest of the universe is made of.”

It is being hope, this 83 year old physicist will be honored with a Noble Prize for his unique discovery, which he surely deserves for long time. But as to qualify for Noble price theories must have experimental proof, so he never qualifies for Noble, now there is no problem for him to qualify and his theory got experimental proof via CERN discovery.
