New Flying Robots Could Throw And Catch A Ball In The Air

You might have seen flying robots playing James Bond theme based music. But have you seen any robot that fly in air, throw ball and catch that same time? If not, then you are about to see one. Researchers at the ETH Zurich’s Flying Machine Arena have made and upgraded some flying robots’ system in such a way that the robots can play with a ball throwing in the air and later catching that via a net while they are in air. Flying Robots Playing In Air With A Ball

Four Swiss researchers – Robin Ritz, Mark W. Müller, Markus Hehn, and Raffaello D’Andrea at ETH Zurich’s Flying Machine Arena have made some skillful, intelligent and calculative flying robots. The quadrocopters (robots) are attached to an elastic net. The net allows the flying robots to catch a marble sized ball by moving themselves and spanning the net under the falling ball.

As the net is elastic, so besides catching the ball, the robots can toss the ball back into the air by rapidly accelerating themselves outwards at a time.

The robots can throw the ball from one net to another by calculating the distance between the two nets. Recently, the Swiss researchers have published a video of these flying robots in action. Just have a look.
