World’s First “CD” And “CD Player” Completes 30 Years

On October 1, 1982, Sony unveiled the first commercially available Compact Disc (CD), Billy Joel‘s sixth studio album 52nd Street. The album was specially designed for the Sony’s CD-101P, the world’s first commercially released CD player. Since then, CDs have grown from audiophile specialty to world-ruling music format to anachronistic punchline.  However on October 1, 2012, the album 52nd Street (CD version) has completed its 30 years. Billy Joel’s 52nd Street was launched initially in 1978. During that period, there was neither any CD nor any CD player in the world. But, the same album was relaunched on October 1, 1982 in CD (Disk). Since October 1982, audio CDs and audio CD players have been commercially available. To play the CD, Sony made and released the world’s first CD player, CD-101P.

The idea of making 20cm thickness disk came in 1974. It was came in Philips‘ (Philips Electronics) mind. By 1977, Philips engineers made an 11.5cm diameter disk. They started to call the disks ‘Compact Disc’. However, after 8 years of hard work, world’s first CD player was built in 1982.
