Intel’s Bay Trail Chip Will Drive Windows 8 Touch Device Prices To $200

At the first-quarter earnings conference call, Intel executives said that Intel is planning to bring Bay Trail chip which is a complete redesign of the Atom micro architecture, and would drive down the price of future Windows 8 touch devices including laptops and tablets to as low as $200.

“Bay Trail is going to be a great product in that segment of the market and enable stunning performance relative to what the competition can bring,” said Stacy Smith, Intel chief financial officer.

On the other side, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said, “If you look at touch-enabled Intel-based notebooks that are ultrathin using [Bay Trail] processors. Those prices are going to be down to as low as $200.”

It is expected that the price of upcoming Haswell chip based standard ultrabooks would be as low as $499. But many people are saying that both Intel executive Otellini and Smith have skipped one thing — at that price (between $200 to $499), devices will come in smaller-sized screens.

However, earlier this month an Intel executive said in China that Bay Trail will be “the most powerful Atom processor to-date, doubling the computing performance of Intel’s current-generation tablet offering” and the design will be “as thin as 8mm (0.3 inches) that have all-day battery life and weeks of standby.”

Intel expects to bring the Bay Trail chip in products for the holiday season.
