The Pirate Bay Switches Domains Again, Moves To .gy

The Pirate Bay has become the hallmark of the endurance and determination of online piracy. Numerous governments and entities have tried to ban it once and for all but it switches domain names and resurfaces. This time, it has moved to a .gy domain.

The Pirate Bay

Over the past few days, efforts to ban the wildly popular torrents site have been ramped up. At the start of this week, piratebay.sx was shut down. Since the domain was hosted at Denmark, the law enforcement agencies were pressurized by a local anti-piracy group to make the move.

Before this recent ban, TPB had been residing on the .sx domain for some seven months now. Many have speculated that the Dutch anti-piracy group was, in turn, influenced by the likes of MPAA who have done all that they can to permanently ban TPB but have failed times and again.

As soon as the .sx domain was banned, TPB moved to a domain registered to Ascension Island, a barely known volcanic island in the South Atlantic. At the same time, TPB revealed that it had more than 70 domain names available which it can use whenever the need be.

Two days after moving to the Ascension Island domain, TPB moved to a Peru-based domain. The latest swtich to a .gy domain suggests that authorities worldwide have suddenly paced up their efforts to ban different TPB domains. That may be a cause of concern for online pirates, although TPB claims that it is working a BitTorrent-powered web browser which will end this cat fight once and for all and make the domains ‘irrelevant.’
