Have you ever bought a music CD from Amazon? If so, there is a chance that you may be eligible for a free digital copy of that CD. The e-retail giant is offering free digital copies to such users who have bought a CD from a catalog of 50,000 select CDs. The free copy will be available through Amazon’s AutoRip service.
AutoRip generates a digital copy of a CD that is eligible and then stores it in the user’s cloud storage account. You can then play the digital copy of the music through the Cloud Player. The online repository of the digital copies is available to customers via their regular web browsers and on tablets and smartphones.
The company has certainly decided to be generous by offering the digital copies to all such customers who have bought an eligible CD from Amazon ever since 1998. The catalog of the selected CDs contains such albums which have been Amazon’s best-sellers over the years. According to the head of digital music at Amazon, Steve Boom, ‘When we picked those 50,000 titles we focused on having a substantial majority of our physical CD sales covered.’
The albums in the catalog include the likes of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” Currently, the AutoRip service is being offered to US customers only. However, we can expect it to be rolled out to users in other regions eventually. Evidently, Amazon’s move is an attempt to garner a greater influence in the digital music arena, trying to entice more users to its content.
