Canon’s 5D Mark III has been doing great sales and seems to be quite popular among the photographers. However, when it comes to raw photography, the benchmark tests of the camera puts it barely above the last model in the line up. When compared to Nikon D800, however, Canon Mark III loses in image sensor performance when shooting raw photos.
These conclusions are a result of tests carried out by DxO Labs. During the test, 5D Mark III’s 22-megapixel image sensor’s performance was pitted against that of the 21-megapixel 5D Mark II as well as that of Nikon D800.
The results show that in the overall score, 5D Mark III barely performs better than 5D Mark II. Mark III has an overall score of 81 while Mark II scores 79. Nikon D800, however, is able to beat them both by a huge margin and prove its mettle in the realm of raw photography – it has a score of 95.
The test comprised of three individual measures – dynamic range, color depth and low-light performance. Nikon’s D800 beat the 5D Mark III in all three of them. However, this is only one tiny part of the picture. Not all photographers tend to indulge in raw photography, so the performance of the Canon’s 5D Mark III during raw photography is only a part of its overall performance.
When considering a camera, once has to consider a whole host of other factors such as durability, autofocus, lens selection, burst shooting speed, ease of use and naturally, the price. 5D Mark III costs $3,500 while Nikon’s D800 can be yours in $3,000. Nonetheless, both cameras are one of the finest offered in this range.
