Spectral Instruments Plans To Make Largest Digital Camera For Professionals, Asks For Public Response

Arizona based Spectral Instruments is planning to make a super high resolution digital camera. This camera has a dynamic range so big that it can photograph both the sun and the stars in broad daylight. And, that can be done by professional photographers on Earth.

The 1110 series from Spectral Instruments (SI) boasts a 112-megapixel CCD sensor of black and white. It measures 95mm x 95mm (3.7-inch), and is extremely light sensitive. It can take exposures lasting hours without recording any noise. To avoid noise on those lengthy shots, SI has a fantastic solution — the chip is cooled to -100 degrees Celsius (-148 degrees Fahrenheit).

Spectral Instruments usually makes sensors for camera systems which is used in laboratory instrumentation or mounted on satellites. The 95mm x 95mm (3.7-inch) sensor is normally used in space telescopes. Large camera including its 95mm x 95mm (3.7-inch) sensor is mainly used in space. But, now the company wants to make a camera for “normal” users.

So far, how this camera works hasn’t been mentioned. The price of this powerful camera hasn’t been revealed. But the cost of its sensor alone is approximate $100,000. Right now, Zeke, a mechanical engineer who works for Spectral Instruments, said that his company isn’t willing to invest on the production of this camera unless it sees a huge response. So, it all depends on us to make this happen. Don’t waste your time, raise your voice, spread the news.
