Intel has long been a major player in the chip industry. But like every other chip-maker, the company has been facing newer challenges as the global computing industry takes a turn from desktop to mobile. Desktop PCs continue to be phased out by companies and individuals; now, Intel has announced that it would shut down its Desktop Motherboard group within the next three years.
The last lineup of motherboards that Intel will provide for the desktop PCs is Haswell motherboards. The company has no plans of developing any new chips to cater to the desktop platform. Intel has been among the leaders of the motherboards for PCs for nearly two decades. And now that the PC sales are on a sharp decline, this was but a very predictable end for Intel’s Desktop Motherboard group.
According to Intel, “We disclosed internally today that Intel’s Desktop Motherboard Business will begin slowly ramping down over the course of the next three years. As Intel gradually ramps down its motherboard business we are ramping up critical areas of the desktop space including integration of innovative solutions for the PC ecosystem such as reference design development, NUC and other areas to be discussed late.”
However, the company stated that despite the shuttering of the group, the company will continue to support valid warranties of desktop motherboards. Moreover, Intel will also supply chipsets to third parties, even after it stops producing its own desktop motherboards.
