Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform is slowly gaining traction on the shoulders of Nokia’s Lumia smartphones. And both Nokia and Microsoft seem committed to make it a success. To this end, Microsoft has been working on the next iteration of its mobile operating system, Windows Phone. Now, an Israeli publication has claimed that it will launch this next version by the end of 2012.
The Israeli publication that has reported this claims that a European distributor of Nokia has made the claim. According to this distributor, Windows Phone 8 will be rolled out on Nokia Lumia handsets by the end of this year.
So far, Microsoft and Nokia have been fairly mum about the next software upgrade of Windows Phone. However, given the date that is being claimed by the distributor, it seems only fitting that both are not talking about it since the release is still quite a few months away.
Windows Phone 8 for Lumia handsets is expected to support a number of new languages. It is also expected to be offering microSD support, support for multi-core processors and much higher resolution displays, which will be inevitable in the upcoming Lumia handsets if Nokia wants to stay in a business currently dominated by high-resolution displays smartphones from Samsung and Apple.
According to the publication, “Eurocom Nokia is expected to launch in the Lumia Nokia devices based on Windows Phone operating system, towards the end of the year, after the released version 8.0 of the operating system that includes full support for Hebrew.”
While the claim seems fairly reliable, since neither Microsoft nor Nokia has commented on it, we will prefer to take it with a grain of salt and wait to see what the official statements say.
