It has been some two and a half years since Microsoft first released Windows 7. And after an utterly abysmal Windows Vista experience, the company was finally able to turn its Windows 7 into a booming success. After Windows XP, Windows 7 was probably the most successful product from Microsoft. Now, the company has announced that the total number of Windows 7 licenses sold has reached 600 million.
This has now been announced by vice president of Microsoft’s OEM division, Steven Guggenheimer. The big milestone was announced at Computex 2012. During the course of his speech, he also explained how Windows 7 will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 once it is launched.
Windows 7 sales have been excellent right from the start. Within some eight months of its release, Microsoft had been able to sell some 150 million licenses. By July 2011, the company had sold 400 million licenses already.
The sheer influence of the OS and its reach in such a brief time can be gauged from the fact that about 39 percent of internet-connected devices are currently using Windows 7. While Windows XP still commands a huge number of users, Windows 7 has gradually made encroaches into the overall Windows population.
Guggenheimer didn’t forget to reassert that the upcoming OS release from Microsoft, Windows 8, is specifically suited for tablets as well as other systems with touch-screens. A number of vendors are already planning of launching Windows 8 tablet once Microsoft comes out with it.
