ARM has been able to assert a significant influence over the smartphone market, with its powerful System-on-Chip offerings. But now, Intel plans to change this by hoping to trump ARM’s chips with its new ‘Silvermont’ microarchitecture.

The key reasons for ARM’s success so far is simply that the company provides chips which are powerful and performance-intensive. Intel claims that the Silvermont architecture it has developed, will be able to provide even better performance in the coming days.

According to the Executive Vice President of Intel, Dadi Perlmutter, “We’re breaking the myth that ARM can do things that Intel cannot.” Once Intel release Silvermont-based chips, they will be ready to power up a whole range of devices, ranging from smartphones to tablets and laptops and more.

But Intel’s primary focus is going to be on the mobile market. Over the past few years, ARM has become a success simply because it was able to entice the smartphone and tablet vendors. If Intel wants to make Silvermont SoCs a success, it will need to ship these chips inside the mobile devices.

In the world of computing prowess, it is always a battle between reducing the size of the chips and adding more performance at the same time. According to Perlmutter, “The real great news here … is not only have we reduced the power in significant [amounts], but we also [did it] with a significant performance increase. We know how to do this.”

His claim is quite substantiated by the fact that dual-core Silvermont Atoms are able to provide 1.6 times more performance as compared to quad-core ARM-based chips. Given these results, we can expect Intel’s SoC to become more popular among the notable smartphone vendors in the coming days.
