Sony Starts Production Of In-Cell Touch Panels For Next iPhone

We have been hearing a whole lot of rumors about the upcoming iPhone, although nearly none of them have been corroborated. We heard that it will feature a greater display and will have in-cell touch panels. And now, a senior analyst at IHS Displaybank, Stone Wu is claiming that Sony has started the mass production of these in-cell touch panels for the next iPhone.

However, Sony will not be the only one furnishing displays for the next iPhone and will be joined by Sharp Corp, Toshiba Mobile Display and LG Display. All these companies are expected to ramp up the production of the in-cell touch panels by the end of this month, preparing for the expected launch of the next iPhone later this year.

According to Wu, “The yield on in-cell panels remains a key issue for most suppliers. Even for those companies that start mass production in May, they can only reach an average yield of 65 to 70 percent at present.”

In-cell touch panels can prove very decisive and important for the appeal of iPhone 5 since these panels will enable to take down the thickness of iPhone 5 and trim it further while at the same time accommodating a larger display. Another huge incentive for Apple in going with in-cell touch panels is that a number of analysts have claimed using such panels can cut down production costs for Apple.
