Caterpillar Enters Smartphone Market With B15 Rugged Android Phone

Caterpillar, also known as CAT, is a company primarily known for construction and mining machinery. No one knew that the company intended to enter into smartphone market. Yesterday, at MWC 2013, CAT unveiled its very first rugged Android smartphone, B15.

The CAT B15 weighs about 170g and measures 125 mm x 69.5 mm x 14.95 mm. This smartphone runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and comes with a 4-inch LCD display with 480 x 800 pixel density, a capacitive multi-touch screen, Gorilla glass and wet finger tracking. Besides, B15 features a 1 GHz dual-core MediaTek MT6577 processor along with 512 MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel rear camera, an unspecified front facing VGA camera, 4 GB internal memory with a microSD slot.

This smartphone is constructed from silver anodized aluminium and shock-absorbing rubber, giving it a sort of built-in protective case appearance. Besides, it is a dust proof as well as a water proof smartphone. The device can handle drops onto concrete from a height of 1.8 meter (around 6 feet).

Dave Floyd, Director of Technology at Bullitt Mobile Ltd who built the CAT B15 under license from Caterpillar, said, “The CAT B15 is one of the most exciting launches in the rugged mobile device sector, a handset that will withstand seriously tough conditions, whilst remaining distinctively designed. Bucking the trend for mobile phones that look great, but fail to stand up to the rigours of an active lifestyle, the CAT B15 brings the heritage, credibility of the CAT brand, combined with the latest mobile technology, delivering a reliable, durable device.”

The device will be carrying a price tag of €329 (equivalent to £299 or US$450) and it will be available in Europe from March. But it’s not been mentioned whether the device will be available in retail stores or just online.
