Smartphone Will Drive The Global Handset Market By 2013

Smartphones are becoming increasingly popular all over the world. They are fast replacing feature phones, due to better functionality and app usability. But, smartphones have not crossed the dominance of feature phones yet. However, a survey shows, smartphones will be leading the global handset market by 2013.

Global Handset Market

Smartphone sales make the bulk of global handset purchases each year. Although the number of non-smartphone mobile phones being sold are still higher, the difference is fast narrowing. Consumers in developed countries have already hooked up to the smartphone frenzy with millions being sold each month.

And with the availability of cheaper smartphones from the likes of Hawaii, the developing nations are also warming up to the notion. Now a new report by IHS iSuppli says that 54 percent of the global handset sales will be accounted for smartphones by 2013.

According to a senior analyst at IHS iSuppli, “This represents a major upgrade for the outlook compared to a year ago, when smartphones weren’t expected to take the lead until 2015. Over the past 12 months, smartphones have fallen in price, and a wider variety of models have become available, spurring sales of both low-end smartphones in regions like Asia-Pacific, as well as mid-range to high-end phones in the United States and Europe.”

Currently, Samsung is the largest handset vendor globally, shipping out the most number of handsets annually. Nokia, the long time crown holder of the first position, is second to Samsung. Apple has a huge appeal in the developed countries and through its iPhone sales alone stands third in the list.
