It appears Microsoft may have sent one of its Surface tablets in for FCC approval earlier this year. It’s labeled model 1516 and running Windows 8 RT with a membrane keyboard peripheral according to documents published by the FCC. The only unconfirmed tidbit is whether it really is a Surface slate branded tablet.
According to the report, the Windows RT tablet contains a built-in stand, FCC label, Bluetooth radio, and 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi radio. The description aligns perfectly with the description of a Surface RT tablet.
The documents note that the assumed Surface tablet was tested between the dates July 17th and 19th of 2012. At the time the tablet was in its pre-production stages.
The timing of the FCC approval garner is interesting because Microsoft had just announced the Windows 8 launch event for October 29th in San Francisco. We are weighing the possibilities on if Microsoft will unveil their Surface slate tablets during that very event.
