Archos has unveiled two new tablet computers with Seagate physical hard drives on board. Because of the high prices of solid-state drives, most tablets have limited storage. To keep the cost reasonable, manufacturers have to opt for offering low-capacity units.
The company has announced that this hard drive, which is the “world’s first handheld tablet computers with hard drives,” the 8-inch Archos 80 G9 and 10-inch Archos 101 G9 sport 2.5-inch Seagate Momentus Thin hard drives. Those hard drives have 7mm profiles and capacity options are set at 320GB, 250GB and 160GB. The last nitty-gritty detail about the hard drives specifically is that buyers can opt for 7200RPM and 5400RPM spin speeds with 16MB of cache are among the first low-cost high-capacity tablets on the market.
And the main reason why tablets don’t use hard-disk drives is the physical size: HDDs are generally not compact enough for the portability of a tablet computer. That is, unless, that HDD is Seagate Technology’s Momentus Thin.
Most other details about the tablets haven’t been published, but we except the Archos G9 family of tablets that features 1.5GHz dual-core processors. They will be the first tablets to offer 250GB of storage, four times the existing top-capacity 64GB tablets on the market, yet the Archos 80 G9 and Archos 101 G9 are expected to cost about $279 and $349, respectively, when they become available in September.
