Eliodomestico – A Solar Oven That Transforms Salty Water Into Drinkable Water

Two of the largest problems in the world are food supply and fresh clean water. Three-forth of the world is filled with water. Most of the sources of water are dirty, salty and therefore undrinkable. In fact, of all the water on earth, only very few percentage of water is available for us to use and drink. On the other hand, finding drinking water in this polluting world in a very easy way is a nightmare. But an Italian designer Gabriele Diamanti doesn’t believe that. He has made a solar oven called Eliodomestico that can transform salty water into drinkable water. 5 liters of salty water can be transformed into drinkable water daily.

Solar Oven

Eliodomestico is a solar household still. Italian designer Gabriele Diamanti started to develop this innovative solar oven from 2005 when he was doing his graduation at Milan Polytechnic. In 2012 (7 years later), finally he has finished developing his innovative solar oven (a prototype). He has named this solar oven Eliodomestico. So how does Eliodomestico convert salt water into drinking water? Let’s see.

Eliodomestico is a soil made stove. It is totally portable.

1

On top of its body, there is a black boiler. When needed to transform salty water into drinkable water, this black boiler has to be fitted on the soil made stove.

2

Salty water has to be poured into the black boiler in the morning.

3

Then the cap of the black boiler has to be tightened and needed to keep the Eliodomestico under the sun whole day.

4

Under the Eliodomestico, there is a portable bowl.

5

The more the temperature and pressure grows, the more fast steam goes downwards through a connection pipe and collects in the lid. In fact, it acts as a condenser. It turns the steam into fresh water.

6

At the end of the day, just need to bring out that portable bowl which is filled with clean drinkable water (maximum 5 liter) from under the Eliodomestico.

7

That’s it. Take the water to your home and drink it.

8

Solar stove Eliodomestico is intended to bring pure drinking water to the families in the developing countries with no cost. The prototype Eliodomestico has been financed by Fondation d’entreprise Hermès. Recently the project has won a Core77 Design Award for Social Impact. Besides, Diamanti has already received international feedback.
