Innovative Wind Turbine Generates Clean Water From Desert Air

Imagine, you’re traveling through a desert. You are very thirsty and in dire need of drinking water. But you have no water with you. You see no water around that place. How would you feel then? Well, desert is such a place, where finding water(fresh) is a dream. Keeping that information in mind, a French-based technology company is working in the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi) to test a wind turbine which can produce drinking water from dry desert air. Though this is not a new concept but this concept is surely different from others and amazing.

Wind is one form of renewable energy source that is helping in the fight against global warming and moving away from fossil fuels. In the Abu Dhabi desert, Eole Water which is based in Sainte Tulle in the south of France is using a revolutionary new wind turbine that converts humidity from desert air into 1,000 liters of drinkable clean water daily. After successfully condensing water from the air, Eole Water pumps it into storage tanks for filtration and purification. This remarkable technology is founded by Marc Parent.

After several years of prototypes and revisions, Parent’s turbine tests began in October, 2011 on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi. Parent’s wind turbine was able to produce 500-800 liters (130-200 gallons) of fresh water every day. The wind turbine is 30 meter high and has a weight of 12 tonnes. The nacelle is six meter long and has a diameter of 2 meter. The diameter of the wind turbine’s rotor is 13 meter. The model of the Eole Water’s condenser system is WMS1000. The turbine generates 30 kilowatts of electricity and winds at 15 miles an hour or more are needed in order to produce water. The company hopes to produce 1,000 liters of water per day.

“Test results show the turbine producing on average, 62 litres of water per hour with an average humidity rate of 45 per cent and an average temperature of 24C,” Thibault Janin, marketing and communications director of Eole Water. “The water production depends on wind speed, temperatures and of course humidity rate.”

Its working process is quiet innovative. Through the cone, at first air goes inside the turbine. Then the air is heated by a generator to create steam. As the steam passes through the cooling compressor, it helps to create moisture and later condensed. Then the condensed moisture is collected. The artificial dew water is sent to stainless steel storage tanks where the water is being filtered and purified for human consumption.

The Eole Water company has spent €2.1 million (Dh10.08 million) in 2010 to finance the new turbine technology developed by 30 engineers. As clean water resources are declining day by day, in future it will be really tough to get fresh water supplies. So, time has come to build new water producing technologies quickly.
