U.S. Elections

Although Hurricane Sandy has passed, it has left a lot of damage in its wake. Houses have been demolished, roads have been uprooted and millions of people have been displaced. New Jersey was among the most affected regions and the state is still reeling from the aftermath of the disaster.

The U.S. presidential election day has arrived right after the catastrophe and authorities are trying their best to accommodate the voters so as to maintain a minimal turnout. To that end, special voting privileges have been extended to the citizens of New Jersey.

In a statement issued by the Department of State, such New Jerseyans who have been displaced by the storm can now send in their votes through email and fax. Displaced voters are first required to submit a mail-in ballot application to the county clerk.

Once the application is approved, the voter will receive an electronic ballot. This can then be used to cast an electronic vote before 8 p.m. on November 6th. If you are a resident of New Jersey and wish to submit a vote electronically, you can find the ballot application here.

Once you’ve filled in the application, you can look up your respective county clerk from the list available here and email or fax the application to him/her.

According to the Governor of New Jersey, Kim Guadango, “This has been an extraordinary storm that has created unthinkable destruction across our state and we know many people have questions about how and where to cast their vote in Tuesday’s election. To help alleviate pressure on polling places, we encourage voters to either use electronic voting or the extended hours at county offices to cast their vote.”
