Facebook Counter-Sues Yahoo In Response To Yahoo’s Lawsuit

Yahoo has been lambasted all around the tech world when it filed a lawsuit against Facebook, claiming that Facebook infringed upon a number of patents owned by Yahoo. Now, Facebook has made the counter-move, filing a lawsuit of its own against Yahoo in which it has alleged that Yahoo infringed some 10 of Facebook’s patents.

The move by Facebook was quite expected. This is how it is being done in the tech world. A counter-suit now brings Facebook the power to negotiate things with Yahoo and perhaps both could settle over an out-of-court deal.

However, it sure seems that Yahoo’s suit angered the folks at Facebook. According to Facebook’s general counsel, Ted Ullyot, ‘From the outset, we said we would defend ourselves vigorously against Yahoo’s lawsuit, and today we filed our answer as well as counter-claims against Yahoo for infringing 10 of Facebook’s patents … While we are asserting patent claims of our own, we do so in response to Yahoo’s short-sighted decision to attack one of its partners and prioritise litigation over innovation.’

Besides, the lawsuit filed by Yahoo was criticized all over the tech world which shows just how much credibility it has. Yahoo has ran into a lot of problems of late, from financial to other, and the company has been trying hard to keep up with the pace of the web. However, in presence of other leaders such as Facebook and Twitter, Yahoo feels increasingly side-lined. One hopes that the disagreement between Facebook and Yahoo is settled amicably without giving birth to yet another unpleasant legal episode between two tech companies.
