Facebook Follows In Twitter’s Footsteps, Launches Hashtags

Hashtags have fast become one of the most wildly popular methods of discovering content on Twitter. They are simple and organized content and can easily be used to search for relevant results. After Twitter, Facebook has also decided to launch hashtags which, the social network claims, will help users become a part of the greater conversation.

Facebook hashtags

Although Facebook is the largest social network on the web right now, it has been unable to let users interact with each other over breaking news and trending topics. Twitter, on the other hand, has been wildly successful in doing so.

Apparently in an attempt to bridge this gap, Facebook has now launched hashtags along the same lines as Twitter. According to the Product Manager at Facebook, Greg Lindley, “To date, there has not been a simple way to see the larger view of what’s happening or what people are talking about’ and that the launch of hashtags is going to change this.

Just like Twitter, hashtags on Facebook will be preceded with a ‘#’ symbol. Thankfully, Facebook has been fairly thoughtful regarding the privacy rights of the users. The social network has affirmed that even if you start using hashtags, your posts wouldn’t be discovered by others unless you tweak your privacy settings to allow this. For instance, if you want a particular post with a popular hashtag to be discovered by other users on Facebook, you can change the privacy settings of that post to ‘Public.’
