The future of the web, without a doubt, is on the mobile platform. And web giants are trying fast to cope up with reality and adopt to it. Among these is Facebook, the social network giant, who is trying hard to make its presence on the mobile platform more solid. And to this end, Facebook has been launching different mobile features.
The company has now created a new mobile feature which is being called ‘find friends nearby.’ Earlier, the feature was called ‘Friendshake.’ Basically, this is yet another feature from Facebook which lets you discover and connect to newer users rather than engaging more with your current contacts.
It is also accessible via Facebook’s mobile apps. To make use of this app, you have to first log into your Facebook account and also that of the Friendshake URL which is www.fb.com/ffn. Once you are logged in to both, you are all set to discover people near you. With the help of the app, you will be able to see friends as well strangers who are near you.
The app was originally developed by Ryan Patterson for a hackathon project. In his own words”
“I built Find Friends Nearby with another engineer for a hackathon project. While it was originally called ‘Friendshake’, we settled on ‘Find Friends Nearby’ for launch (the URL was a little bit of a homage to the previous iteration).
For me, the ideal use case for this product is the one where when you’re out with a group of people whom you’ve recently met and want to stay in contact with. Facebook search might be effective, or sharing your vanity addresses or business cards, but this tool provides a really easy way to exchange contact information with multiple people with minimal friction.”
The app is currently available on both iOS and Android apps of Facebook. And it is a testimony to Facebook’s increasingly greater efforts of making itself more relevant on the mobile realm.
