Twitter was recently inaccessible in nearly all parts of the world. Given the immense significance of the micro-blogging website in the social media, this naturally triggered a huge response online. The website couldn’t be accessed for a total of 1 hour and 40 minutes. Now, a hacker claims that she took down the website.
This was the longest crash of Twitter in quite a long time. And it was quite serious in that earlier, Twitter usually display the ‘Fail Whale’ message when the load is too much on its servers. In its place, those who tried accessing the website were returned with an error saying that the site timed out or that the page could not load.
The responsibility for this has now been claimed by a hacker from the group UG Nazi, a group which was a part of LulzSec in the past. This hacker calls herself ‘Cosmo’ and she said that it was very easy to take down the website.
According to Cosmo, “It wasn’t really difficult at all, I myself honestly thought Twitter would be more protected from a DDoS Attack, but I guess not.” Interestingly, the attack wasn’t really meant to accomplish anything, claims Cosmo, “The attack was mainly for the ‘lulz’, it goes to show what we are capable of.”
The flipside of the coin is that Twitter claims that the hiatus occurred due to ‘a cascaded bug in one of our infrastructure components.’ Twitter further ruled out that this was a result of any hack attacks and simply pinned it on a bug which it says its engineers worked on to sort within hours.
