A Meteoroid Streaked Through Sky Over East Coast Last Friday

On March 22, a bright object was spotted up and down the northern mid-Atlantic United States from Maryland to Manhattan to Massachusetts. Streaking across the sky just before 8 p.m. EDT, the fireball was witnessed by thousands of people. Most importantly, the American Meteor Society alone has received over 630 reports on its website from the event. According to NASA‘s Meteoride Environment Office, the object might be a meteoroid.

Bill Cooke of NASA’s Meteoroid Environmental Office said that, “going on visual reports,” the flash was “a single meteor event.” He also said that the event was not unusual but was widely reported because it happened across a populated area on last Friday night.

The Meteoroid Environment Office said that the meteoroid was about a yard in diameter. People spotted the streak of light in both Maryland and Virginia — and as far north as New York and Maine. It was traveling about 10 miles per second, much faster than even a speeding bullet. Many people said it appeared to be blue or green. Here is the American Meteor Society’s heat map showing the sighting of meteoroid seen in which areas.
