Christmas is drawing nearer and the festivities of the holiday season are on the roll. Every year at Christmas, the central square in Brussels is beset with a Christmas tree for the general public. This year, the square is hosting a giant tree partly made up of steel and 82-feet in height. The innovation seems to have offended quite a few.

This abstract Christmas tree is being termed ‘Abies Electronicus’ and has been developed by 1024 Architecture. Every night, the tree is draped in lights of different colors and lets the viewers feast on an eclectic collection of music.

You can even climb to the top of this tree and get a rather beautiful view of the city. However, a lot of people seem to have taken an offence to this modernistic innovation by the city authorities. In fact, more than 25,000 people have already signed a petition which essentially attempts to guard conservative principles and opposes the tree on those grounds.

There are also those who are opposing the new tree on environmental basis, considering the replacement of an actual tree with disapproval. Belgium has already been a focus of the changing sociopolitical dynamics that are happening in the country and the consequent problems it has to face. This Christmas tree somewhat symbolizes all that.

However, the city authorities are of the view that they are simply trying to celebrate Christmas in a better manner. According to Councillor Philippe Close, “What we want is just to modernise the pleasure of winter, of this Christmas market and all the image of Brussels.” You can watch the video below to see what a lovely view the tree presents at night.
