Earlier, we have seen scientists creating artificial kidney, artificial nose even artificial heart in laboratory. Now we have come to know that some scientists have created mini human brains in the laboratory.
To create human brain tissues in the test tubes in a laboratory, some biologists at the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology in Vienna used stem cells. They dubbed the cells as “cerebral organoids” each measuring 3 to 4 millimeter. The artificial brain tissues were actually pea-sized blobs of 3D brain tissue in a Petri dish, with characteristics of early embryonic brain tissue. In other words, the brain was full of small 3D sections of tissue that apparently resembled the brain of a 9-week-old fetus. However, this artificial human brain tissues allowed the scientists to watch how the organs develop in the womb.
The goal of these scientists is to be able to use lab-grown brains to study illnesses, like schizophrenia and autism. Scientists hope that the technology will help biologists study “human-specific” features of human brain development, disease and it will increase their understanding of neurological and mental problems.
Scientists have published their study in the science journal Nature.
