Ethical Gene Selection In The Embryos Is A Moral Obligation, Oxford Academic Claims

We are in the era of genetic revolution. Genetic engineering has flourished mostly in recent the times ever since its invention. Do you support genetically engineered ethical babies? Oxford academic Professor Julian Savulescu is strongly suggesting so-called designer babies and also asserting that it is a moral obligation for the parents to consider those babies.

We all know that we have nothing to do on its future characteristics when a baby is born. But Julian Savulescu suggests that we should provide choice to the parents to screen out personality flaws in their children. By this the likeliness of harming themselves and others will be reduce among those children.

Professor Savulescu claims this controversial issue in the Telegraph. He is also going to explain his claims in the upcoming issue of Reader’s Digest. The claim suggests having better characteristics & future for the children & responsible parenting is needed to sort out the flaws like by screening in and screening out certain genes in the embryos, it should be possible to influence how a child turns out.

“Surely trying to ensure that your children have the best, or a good enough, opportunity for a great life is responsible parenting? Prof Savulescu said. He also told, “So where genetic selection aims to bring out a trait that clearly benefits an individual and society, we should allow parents the choice. To do otherwise is to consign those who come after us to the ball and chain of our squeamishness and irrationality.”

“Indeed, when it comes to screening out personality flaws, such as potential alcoholism, psychopathy and disposition to violence, you could argue that people have a moral obligation to select ethically better children. They are, after all, less likely to harm themselves and others. If we have the power to intervene in the nature of our offspring — rather than consigning them to the natural lottery — then we should.”
