Earlier we have seen technology to charge mobile phone with shoes or a special devices that can fully recharge cellphone just in 20 seconds. Now scientists are heading towards a breakthrough. Scientists are trying to develop a mobile phone charger that will able to charge mobile phones with human urine!

Scientists at Bristol Robotics Laboratory in the U.K. have figured out a new way to make urine powerful enough to charge a smartphone. In a test they passed human urine through a series of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), containing tiny microbes that consume and metabolize the liquid into small amounts of energy. Scientists made a system that transfers the collected energy into a capacitor and the urine finally ended up giving a small charge directly to smartphone.

Dr. Ioannis Ieropoulos, who is an expert at harnessing power from unusual sources using microbial fuel cells, from the University of the West of England, and who participated in the research along with the University of Bristol researchers said, “No one has harnessed power from urine to do this so it’s an exciting discovery. So far, the microbial fuel power stack that we have developed generates enough power to enable SMS messaging, Web browsing and to make a brief phone call. The beauty of this fuel source is that we are not relying on the erratic nature of the wind or the sun; we are actually reusing waste to create energy.”

So far tests have been successful, but the team still needs to perfect the method so that MFCs can provide a full battery charge. The research is part of an ongoing project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and U.K. Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
