AMD to Get Ahead Intel with Lightning Bolt

Apparently, Intel’s Thunderbolt believed to be the next standard in the business received a response from AMD: Lightning Bolt technology. The news was published on AnandTech with all the necessary technical explanations that can persuade the customers to adopt the new brand on this market.

The technology from AMD is supposed to be very simple, affordable and able to deliver USB 3.0, DisplayPort and Power over a single cable with mini DisplayPort connectors. As AnandTech describes the technology, “On the notebook side is a mux that combines power, DisplayPort and USB 3.0 into a single DP-like cable. The other end of the cable would connect to a Lightning Bolt breakout box that would provide USB 3.0, DisplayPort and power ports.”

However the new standard suggested by AMD has its limitations when it comes to design. Apparently, AMD realizes the shortcomings of Lightning Bolt considering that the company claims that USB3.0 is capable of faster transfer speeds than USB 2.0 standard, “but not full speed”. However, there is no information about how much power a user can send over the interface. AMD also announced that the docking stations are expected to cost as much as USB 3.0 hub and the new product should hit the market by the end of this year.
