World’s First Live Surgery Done Using Google Glass

Google Glass is a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted display (OHMD), developed by Google. Earlier we have seen hacker taking control of drone using Google Glass. However, lately a surgeon at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has become the first in the United States to transmit a surgery live using Google Glass!

Dr. Christopher Kaeding, who is the director of sports medicine at Ohio State, performed the surgery on August 21. His patients was 47 years old Paula Kobalka, 47. However, during the surgery, Kaeding he used the front-facing camera of Google Glass to record and transmit the surgery to a colleague as well as assistant professor of general internal medicine at Ohio State, Dr. Ismail Nabeel, who was miles away through a Google Hangout video chat. That means, Google Glass provided the doctors a live, point-of-view video from the operating room.

However, after achieving such success, the university said in a statement that in the near future, doctors with Glass might be able to use voice commands to “call up x-ray or MRI images of their patient, pathology reports or reference materials, collaborating live, and face-to-face with colleagues via the Internet, anywhere in the world.”

Here is the video footage of that live surgery.

Now it is being holed that Google Glass technology may drastically change the future of medicine.
