Leap Motion has made a number of headlines in the recent past for creating different motion-control devices. The company has now announced that it has joined hands with HP, a deal which may finally bring gesture-control technology to the mainstream PC arena.
The deal between the two companies will be mutually beneficial. HP is currently on a downward spiral, in part due to the fact that the PC industry itself is on a continuous decline. However, by adding Leap Motion’s technology, HP will be able to offer its laptops and PCs as machines equipped with a cutting-edge technology. This may bolster the company’s sales.
Leap Motion, on the other hand, has been working on gesture-control products for some time but hasn’t been able to take them mainstream. With this deal, the company may finally find a way into the mainstream PC arena. As per the deal, the AirSpace app store of Leap Motion will be pre-loaded on HP machines when they are shipped to the consumers.
Commenting on this new partnership, Leap Motion’s president and COO Andy Miller stated, “They were a logical choice for us with their sheer distribution and their worldwide footprint.”
The interesting part is that this may not be the only deal that Leap Motion has inked. Miller only gives us a mild hint when he further says, “We are anxious and encouraging of folks to license our technology, non-consumer as well. We’ve had conversations about robotic surgery, automotive, fighter jets, data visualization… and any place where there is a cleanliness aspect where you can’t use touch – like in an operating room or clean room or even fast-food kitchen.”
