Communication across the mobile platform has been becoming speedier and more advanced by each passing year. While 3G is still considered a really fast-speed network, the world is already moving on to 4G networks. The expansion of 3G technology has rather been slow so far, taking a total of 12 years to reach only half of the world’s population.
But with the explosive growth of the mobile platform, specifically the unbelievable sales of smartphones, the demand for 3G technology is increasing rapidly too and it is estimated that by 2017, more than 85% of the world will have 3G technology.
This, in the view of the wireless vendor, Ericsson. In an infographic about the growth of 3G and 4G technologies, Ericsson makes use of a data from its labs, customers and from numerous other sources.
According to the infographic, the speed of expansion of 4G networks is even faster than that of 3G technology. And that by 2017, LTE will be available for 50% of the global population. This is incredibly fast since LTE became known only as recently as 2010.
This is, in a way, inevitable too since every new generation of cellular technology has gained faster traction in the world that its previous brothers. The growth of these technologies is also, in part, due to the explosive demand for and use of smartphones.
According to the infographic, there are some 6.2 billion mobile connections in the world, a figure that is estimated to reach 9 billion in 2017. And out of these 9 billion connections, a whopping 3 billion will be used be smartphone users.
