Global Application Development Market To Surpass $9 Billion: Gartner

Application development has seen a massive boom in recent years. And this boom has been a fruit of the immense growth of the mobile platform and cloud computing. Now, according to the estimates of analyst firm Gartner, the projected value of the global application development market is more than $9 billion in 2012.

Application Development

According to Gartner, three major factors are driving the application development market to newer heights – cloud, mobility and open source.

In its report titled “Market Trends: Application Development Software, Worldwide 2012-2016”, Gartner states that cloud computing has significantly altered the realm of application development. Developers can now develop apps, test them and then deploy them over the cloud.

In fact, there’s an ever-increasing demand from the clients to have cloud-enabled applications from the get-go. According to Asheesh Raina, a principal research analyst at Gartner, “The trend is compelling enough to force traditional AD vendors to ‘cloud-enable’ their existing offerings and position them as a service to be delivered through the cloud.”

The mobile platform has also played a huge role for the application development market. In fact, it is being estimated that by 2015, mobile development project will be four times greater in volume than the development geared towards native PC projects.

Talking how open-source has bolstered the application development front, Raina says, “Open source software tools will continue to erode revenue for some AD categories in design, testing, and web development. This is being driven primarily by the success of Eclipse and NetBeans, as well as by overall revitalization of the market by new small software providers looking for technical and market-disruptive approaches for offering products. Limited budgets and economic conditions compelling enough to focus on cost reduction also fuel the use of open-source software in various development projects.”
