The smartphone industry has boomed and expanded in recent times to become so lucrative that every tech giant wants to be a part of it. However, only those who are able to put up with the cut-throat competition have had any success here. Now, the chip industry giant, Intel has plans of making it big in the smartphone market. The company told this to its investors at its annual investor day.
It’s not that Intel hasn’t been in the smartphone market already. Intel is already having its Atom chip being used in a number of smartphones. The functioning of these smartphones, we are told, is good enough to put them up as worthy rivals to Galaxy S II and Galaxy Nexus.
However, Intel plans to up the ante and launch a number of dual-core processor, the Medfield Z2580. According to the company, the smartphone will also come with 4G LTE silicon which, too, will be Intel-branded. With the inception of newer chip architectures, Intel has been very confident in the speed at which it is producing newer chips.
The company has been saying for some time that its newer chips ‘defy Moore’s law.’ And now, at the investor call day, Paul Otellini pretty much reiterate this, “Put another way, chip development that would ordinarily take six years will be carried out in three.”
Intel has been working with a number of companies including Orange, Motorola, ZTE and Lenovo to launch a number of Intel-based smartphone devices into the market. And with its intent of aggressively pursuing the path, Intel may as well gain some traction in the smartphone market.
