Chip maker AMD has announced the details of its Hondo APU (Accelerated Processing Units), exclusively for Windows 8 tablets. The Z-60 Hondo APU is an 1 GHz dual-core processing unit with 80 Radeon cores. AMD aims to go head-to-head with Intel’s Clover Trail line of processor with Hondo.
AMD claimed that its Z-60 APU, which includes Radeon HD 6250 graphics cores, can deliver five to six times more performance than Intel’s latest generation of Atom chips. The Z-60 system can even play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at 1024 x 768 resolution at 30 frames per second.
AMD’s Hondo is power efficient even with its impressive performance scores. A tablet with a 30 WHr battery would last about 10 hours in Windows Presentation Mode, almost 8 hours during web browsing, about 6 hours during video playback, and about 2 weeks in S3 standby mode.
AMD has shown some prototype tablets equipped with Z-60 Hondo APU. Price of devices powered with Z-60 APUs have been hinted to be more than $500; lower than Intel Clover Trail based Windows 8 tablets, but well above the price of best-selling Android tablets from Google and Amazon. Getting a sizable market share would not be easy, as AMD itself acknowledged the fact that consumers don’t buy tablet PCs considering their performance.
