For long time, smartphone makers had been trying to ship more smartphones in a quarter than regular mobile phones. Unfortunately, it always remained a dream until recently. Research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) has reported that for the first time, more smartphones have been shipped in the first quarter of this year than regular mobile phones; Korean tech giant Samsung leads the battle.
According to IDC, in the first quarter of 2012, a total of 402.4 million mobile phones were shipped but in the first quarter of 2013, a total of 418.6 million mobile phones have been shipped which is 16.2 million higher than the first quarter of 2012.
In the first quarter of 2013, Samsung shipped 70.7 million smartphones, while Apple, LG, Huawei and ZTE shipped 37.4 million, 10.3 million, 9.9 million and 9.1 million devices, respectively. By shipping the aforementioned units in Q1 of 2013, Samsung grabbed 32.7%, Apple 17.3%, LG 4.8%, Huawei 4.6% and ZTE 4.2% of the smartphone market. In addition, shipment of Samsung increased by 60.7% percent, Apple by 6.6%, LG by 110.2%, Huawei by 94.1% and ZTE by 49.2% compared to the year-over-year period.
On the other side, in the first quarter of 2013, Samsung shipped 115 million normal phones, while Nokia, Apple, LG and ZTE shipped 61.9 million, 37.4 million, 15.4 million and 13.5 million devices, respectively. By shipping the aforementioned units in Q1 of 2013, Samsung grabbed 27.5%, Nokia 14.8%, Apple 8.9%, LG 3.7% and ZTE 3.2% of the smartphone market. In addition, shipment of normal mobile phone of Samsung increased by 22.9%, Apple by 6.6% and LG by 12.4% compared to the year-over-year period. But shipment of normal mobile phone of Nokia and ZTE decreased by 25.1% and 16.5%, respectively compared to the year-over-year period.
