In a latest revelation by Appleinsider, it has been found that Apple has filed a number of patents regarding ‘fuel cell batteries’ operating on hydrogen. According to the patents submitted, these batteries are a great alternative to the regular batteries and may have a charge-life of days or even up to weeks after a single recharge. Apple plans to implement these batteries in it’s MacBook series.
In the patent filed by Apple, Apple first refers to the exhausting reserves of fossil fuel and also makes a comment that US has to engage with different nations in Middle East for the sake for fuel, forcing US to maintain complex military and political relationships with these nations. By providing this context and background, Apple then proposes that it has a new and much more efficient solution for powering up machines. The fuel cell batteries operate on hydrogen, in collaboration with an existing power source inside the computer.
According to Apple, these battery offer a far better ‘volumetric’ and ‘gravimetric’ energy densities, thus enabling them to run devices for days on end, sometimes even weeks. It must be noted here that currently, the standard MacBook battery averages out about 10 hours after a single recharge, which in itself is far higher than what is offered by most laptops. With the advent of this fuel cell battery, Apple will undoubtedly gain a huge advantage on it’s other competitors. But the problem is that it is still in the blue-prints for now and will possibly take another few years before it turns into a reality.
