Toshiba’s come over all nostalgic, with the launch of three new machines to mark its 25 years in the laptop business.
There’s a new dual-screen Libretto, looking for all the world like a slightly over-fed Nintendo DS and weighing in at a little under two pounds.
The W100 is based on a 1.2GHz Intel Pentium U5400 CPU with up to 2GB memory. There are options for either a 320GB spinning hard drive or a 62GB solid state drive, and a claimed five-hour battery life. There’s a USB port, a microSD card reader, a 1-megapixel webcam and Wifii.
The clamshell device has two seven-inch haptic screens. One acts as a virtual keyboard, using any of six different versions supplied with the device. Each screen has a 1,024 x 600 resolution.
It looks likely to find applications for web surfing and as a rather dinky little e-book reader if the company can sign up publishers. The Libretto W100 will cost from $1,099, and will be available in August.
Also out today is a new Portege model, the R700, which weighs three pounds and is 20mm thick with a 13.3-inch display. There’s a choice of Intel Core i7, i5 or i3 processors running Windows 7 with up to 4GB of RAM and a choice of 320GB HDD or a 128GB solid state drive. It should be available this month.
Finally, the company’s launching the AC100 mobile internet device, which has a 1,024 x 600 screen and an eight-hour battery life, says the company. It runs Android 2.1 and has an Nvidia Tegra 250 processor with 512MB of RAM. It’s due out in August.
