Ex-Nokia Staff Form Jolla To Build MeeGo-Based Smartphones

MeeGo devices  had been a rage in its days. Without a doubt, Nokia was able to churn out some really sleek  MeeGo smartphones back in the days. However, with the onslaught of iOS and Android offerings, MeeGo somehow got into the backseat and grew into obscurity. But it seems some dedicate MeeGo lovers wish to bring back the days of its glory.

Now, a group of ex-Nokia staff and some brilliant minds from the MeeGo community are collaborating under a new venture being called ‘Jolla.’ This new mobile startup aims to create, out of this collaboration, new an better MeeGo smartphones.

A tweet from the official Jolla account reads, “New #MeeGo smartphones will be created together with our industrial and investor partners and with support of the MeeGo community.”

However, the MeeGo devices that will be produced by Jolla will, in no way, be linked to Nokia neither will it be providing any kind of support to the existing Nokia MeeGo devices. According to the LinkedIn page of the startup, it comprises of “directors and core professionals from Nokia’s MeeGo N9 organization, together with some of the best minds working on MeeGo in the communities.”

The startup is being headed by Marc Dillon. Dillon had been with Nokia for 11 years and on the MeeGo for about 12 years. Given the expertise that he brings to the company, one can hope that the startup may indeed bring out some beautiful products.

The official statement from Jolla reads:

“Nokia created something wonderful – the world’s best smartphone product. It deserves to be continued, and we will do that together with all the bright and gifted people contributing to the MeeGo success story. Together with international investors and partners, Jolla Ltd. will design, develop and sell new MeeGo based smartphones. The Jolla team consists of a substantial number of MeeGo’s core engineers and directors, and is aggressively hiring the top MeeGo talent to contribute to the next generation smartphone production.”
