Apple has recently made a significant change at its Online Store. The change incorporates the availability of the 1 terabyte hybrid Fusion Drive as a build-to-order option for the entry-level 21.5-inch iMac. Earlier, the Fusion Drive was available to go only with high-end iMac models.

This new option will be beneficial for the prospective buyers of the 21.5-inch iMac. As it is, the 21.5-inch model is the most affordable iMac model currently available on Apple’s Online Store. The option of adding a 1-terabyte hybrid Fusion Drive is going to cost you an additional $250.

Apple’s hybrid Fusion Drive has already attracted praise from different quarters. The company claims that this hybrid drive couples the space of a traditional hard drive with the speed and performance of a solid state drive. Both the software and hardware are specialized; so far, the performance of the drive does show that it is an excellent upgrade over the regular hard drive. At the same time, it costs a lot less than the SSD of a similar size.

Startup times of the Fusion Drive have been tested to be nearly 50% less compared to the regular hard drive and there are significant performance enhancement in its reading and writing speeds too.

Fusion Drive joins a 128-gigabyte SSD with 1-terabyte of HDD and the software governing its operations is part of the OS X Mountain Lion. The operating system and other important system applications are stored on the SSD whereas the rest goes on the HDD. By coupling the two technologies in such a seamless manner, Apple has surely brought down the costs of having a good, speedy storage medium.
